AI Overview

An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google places above traditional search results, which answers a query directly in a few sentences and links out to a handful of cited sources instead of ranking ten blue links.

Mechanically, Google retrieves a set of candidate pages the way it always has, then a language model reads them and writes a short synthesized answer with inline source links. That means two separate gates. Your page has to be retrievable at all, which is ordinary SEO, and then it has to contain a passage the model finds worth summarizing or quoting. Pages that rank first are not automatically cited, and pages cited in an Overview are sometimes not in the top ten links beneath it.

The commercial consequence is that an Overview can answer the query completely. If someone asks what a term means and the box defines it, there is no click. Publishers have widely reported click-through declines on informational queries since Overviews rolled out, though the size varies enormously by query type and Google disputes the harshest readings. Queries where the user still needs something specific from you, like pricing, a tool, a template or a real opinion, hold up far better than queries you can fully answer in forty words.

The practical response is not to stop publishing definitions. It is to make the definition clean enough to get cited and to put something behind it the Overview cannot summarize away. Google does not publish which passages it selects or why, and its guidance says only to make helpful content, so treat any precise formula for winning Overviews as unverified.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI Overview in Google search?

An AI Overview is the AI-written answer Google shows at the top of many search results pages, above the normal links. It summarizes information drawn from several web pages and shows those pages as citations alongside it. It appears on some queries and not others, most often on informational questions, and Google decides when to trigger it without publishing the criteria.

Do AI Overviews hurt website traffic?

For informational queries, usually yes. When the Overview fully answers the question, the user has no reason to click, and publishers have widely reported drops in click-through rate on those queries. The impact is uneven: transactional, comparison and tool-based searches hold up much better because the user still needs something the summary cannot provide. Google disputes the largest reported declines, and no neutral measurement is definitive.

How do you get your site into an AI Overview?

Be retrievable first, which means the ordinary things: crawlable pages, real topical relevance, content that ranks. Then write passages that answer one question directly in one or two sentences so a model can lift them cleanly. Being cited is not the same as ranking first, and Google publishes no selection criteria, so nobody can guarantee inclusion. Anyone promising placement in an Overview is selling something.
