User-generated content (UGC)
User-generated content, or UGC, is any content created and shared by customers, fans, or users rather than by the brand itself, including reviews, photos, videos, and posts that feature or reference a product or company.
UGC is content the audience makes, not the brand. A customer posts a photo using your product, writes a review, films an unboxing, or mentions you in a thread. Because it comes from a real user with nothing obvious to gain, it reads as more credible than polished brand material. That credibility is the entire point: people trust other people more than they trust advertising, so a genuine post from a customer often outperforms the brand's own version of the same message.
The mechanism is social proof plus reach. Every piece of UGC both vouches for you and distributes you to an audience the brand does not own, which is why customer content quietly seeds much of the sharing that never shows up in your analytics. The catch is authenticity: the moment UGC feels staged or incentivized, it loses the trust that made it valuable. Audiences are quick to spot content that was commissioned to look organic.
A common point of confusion is "paid UGC," where a creator is hired to produce content in the native, casual style of a real user. It can perform well, but it is not the same thing, and treating paid content as authentic user content is where brands lose credibility. The strongest UGC is the kind you earn by making something worth talking about, then making it easy for customers to share.
